Statement

My work is a celebration of holding onto youthful joy and wonder – an invitation and challenge to live authentically as your true self. Recently I have explored themes of identity and maturity, specifically the concept of paedomorphosis. The term paedomorphosis describes a phenomenon of maturation without undergoing metamorphosis. This phenomenon is present in the axolotl, a Mexican salamander. The axolotl, unlike other salamanders, reaches maturity without going through metamorphosis from their aquatic larval stage to an adult terrestrial stage, I am interested in exploring how this concept of maturation without metamorphosis could be applied to humans and our development of psychological and emotional maturity. I hypothesize that some humans are the axolotls of our species – anomalies that reach maturity without abandoning our childlike characteristics. I believe that I am one of these people.
